Sponsor Spouse Canada Income Requirements.

This is one of the most common questions couples ask before starting a spousal sponsorship application, and the short answer surprises most people: in the vast majority of cases, no, there's no minimum income requirement to sponsor a spouse or partner. That's a meaningful difference from parent and grandparent sponsorship, which does require sponsors to meet a minimum income threshold. Here's what actually applies, and the one situation where an income test does kick in.

This is general information, not legal advice. If you'd like a case-specific assessment, our team at Brace Law is happy to help.

The General Rule: No Minimum Necessary Income

For spousal, common-law, and conjugal partner sponsorship, IRCC does not require you to meet a Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold in most cases. This is one of the reasons spousal sponsorship is considered one of the more accessible immigration pathways the primary scrutiny is on whether your relationship is genuine, not on your paycheque.

That said, "no minimum income requirement" doesn't mean finances are irrelevant. You'll still need to demonstrate, as part of your sponsorship undertaking, that you can provide for the basic needs of your spouse and any accompanying dependants food, clothing, shelter, and health needs not covered by public health services. There's no specific dollar figure attached to this in the general case, but it's part of what you're formally committing to.

The Exception: When an Income Test Does Apply

There's one specific circumstance where a minimum income requirement kicks in for spousal sponsorship: if the spouse or partner you're sponsoring has a dependent child who themselves has a dependent child (in other words, a grandchild in the application). The same applies if the dependent child you're sponsoring has a dependent child of their own.

In that narrower scenario, you're required to meet the Minimum Necessary Income, calculated using Statistics Canada's annual Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) figures, adjusted for your family size. If this applies to you, you'll need to include a Financial Evaluation (IMM 1283) form with your application.

Note for Quebec residents: if you live in Quebec, you don't submit the IMM 1283 to IRCC, Quebec's provincial rules and undertaking process apply instead.

What Counts as Income, If the Test Applies to You

If you do fall into the exception above, a few details matter:

·       Maternity, parental, and sickness benefits paid under the Employment Insurance Act count as income for MNI purposes.

·       Regular Employment Insurance benefits and federal training allowances generally don't count toward MNI — though a temporary public policy allowed this for the 2020 and 2021 tax years specifically.

What You Can't Sponsor With, Regardless of Income

Even though there's no general income floor, there are other financial and legal circumstances that can disqualify you as a sponsor entirely, separate from income:

·       Being in default on a previous sponsorship undertaking (i.e., your previously sponsored family member received social assistance and you haven't repaid it)

·       Defaulting on an immigration loan

·       Failing to make court-ordered child or spousal support payments

·       Having declared bankruptcy that hasn't been discharged

·       Currently receiving social assistance for a reason other than a disability

These aren't income tests in the traditional sense, they're about financial obligations and history, and they apply regardless of how much you currently earn.

Why This Matters for Planning Your Application

Because there's no income requirement in most cases, couples sometimes assume finances play no role at all in the file. That's not quite right, evidence of shared finances (joint accounts, shared bills, financial interdependence) is actually part of what demonstrates your relationship is genuine, which is the real focus of a spousal sponsorship review. So while you won't need to prove you clear a specific income bar, financial entanglement between you and your spouse is still meaningful evidence in the application, just for a different reason than income qualification.
